And I thought I was the Good Samaritan

A few weeks ago I was out on a quest to find some reasonably priced dinner for my wife and me. As I closed the sliding door to our minivan, after loading the two dogs, I still had no idea where I was going to find something different at 9:00 P.M. on a Saturday. I was heading towards Taco Bell on Brookpark Road and Ridge. While we were sitting at the light just south of Pearl, I remembered my wife saying there was a new donut shop that had just opened up on Pearl just east of Ridge.

I figured I would head past there to see if they were still open. I was happy to see the open sign lit and the lights on. I pulled in thinking I would just get a couple of donuts for dessert. I might have a slight donut affliction, but I digress. I walked in to check things out and was surprised to find donuts, bagels, muffins, ice cream, and even gyros. Hey one stop shopping.

I ordered two gyros and some other goodies to, "help the guy out" right his baked goods looked wonderful. I waited for him to cook the gyros and bread. He took such care with the toppings and vegetables I thought wow this will be great. While I was waiting I did a quick Google search for his business name "Mini Market Donuts". On the second page there was a very unclear listing . The Yellow Pages put in the wrong phone number and listed his company name that he files taxes under, not the regular business name.

I merely suggested to him on the way out that he might want to get a Facebook page or something. After finishing my dinner/dessert I took a few minutes to think back about my unsuccessful searching online. As somebody who is working to get Pyropooch.com started I know how important SEO- search engine optimization is. I also knew that I could help him get a web presence.

After A few days I went back to see Gamal. We had a great conversation. I explained how I could make him a web site and more importantly get him signed up with Google places. I told him how I had just graduated from college and was having trouble finding a job. I was not there to take advantage and that I just wanted to help him. We came to very reasonable terms since he was just starting out and so was I. The critical negotiating point was free coffee. If I was working there I would get free coffee. And so it was. I was a good Samaritan helping out this nice man who impressed me with his gyros.

Over the next few weeks I worked on his sites and took pictures of the products, building, you name it I was going to put it all on the site. We also had a chance to talk about other things. He told me that he was from Egypt, that most of his family was still there, and how opening at 5:00 A.M. and closing at 10:00 P.M. was hard. He was only getting 3 hours of sleep per night. I can say that I consider Gamal Hassan to be a friend. I can also say that all the training in school was great. I went above and beyond and have learned a lot of the Google software. I also consider Gamal to be the good Samaritan since he was the one to believe in me, and trust what I was telling him. He did what so many others would not, he gave me a shot. For that I will be forever grateful. It helped me to, as Lawrence Fishburn said in The Martix, "He is beginning to believe."
And I was. Since then I have plans to work on more projects for him and his friends.
